Life Capsule 2.4 Cruise Altitude - Stabilize your Narrative

Life Capsule 2.4 Cruise Altitude - Stabilize your Narrative

Mission Outcome

By the end of Cruise Altitude, you will be able to clearly explain what you do, how you got here, and where you’re going - without checking a resume or profile - and feel emotionally grounded in that story.

Estimated Steady Voyager Time:

Record your start time in the Mission Time Log.

At this altitude, the goal is to cruise. You’ve climbed, mapped your diagram, and started to see your work ecosystem. Now it’s time to talk about it—not as a pitch, not as a resume, but as a clear, confident story.

You set the autothrottle to your target airspeed. You’re not worried about every gust or shift in the wind; you choose your pace.

Looking down, you see the patchwork of your experiences spread across the ground, and the shadow of your aircraft gliding over land, lake, and then sea.

Next you check your groundspeed. You understand the dual dimensions of your flight: how fast life feels, and how fast things are actually moving. You’re slower over the ground than you planned, so you gauge the headwinds and tailwinds and adjust your route. You’re still not keeping pace, so you check the winds again and change your altitude.

You find it—your happy pace. Stay here. Practice your career story with your tools. Refine it, say it out loud, and then iterate and iterate, until this narrative feels as natural as cruising at altitude.

Step 1. Talk It Out with Pi

Before you polish anything just start talking. No scripts. No bullets. Just you, answering questions. With this flight path you’ll first meander and explore.

  1. Go to hey.pi.ai, or another conversational AI, and sign up / login.
  2. Paste this prompt (or something similar) to kick things off:
I’m practicing how to talk about my work story. Please ask me warm, curious questions about what I do, how I got here, and why it matters to me. Keep the tone friendly and conversational.
  1. Talk for at least 5 - 10 minutes. Answer as if you’re on a walk with someone who wants to understand you. Don’t worry about saying it “right”. Just notice what comes out.
  2. After the conversation, go to your mission console and create a Note. Label it ‘Telling My Story’ or something similar. Write down 3 - 5 phrases that felt especially true or energizing and any questions that made you pause and think.

Step 2. Gratitude & Wins

Some of the best stories have one thing in common - a thread of gratitude woven throughout. This thread can bind losses back into meaning, cover gaps where life went different directions, and highlight opportunities or leaps of faith. In your Telling My Story note, create two short lists:

1. Work Journey Gratitude

  • List people who opened the doors or believed in you.
  • Opportunities and chances you’re glad you took.
  • Challenging lessons that shaped you.

2. Recent Wins

  • Things that you’ve done in the last 6 - 12 months - big or small - that you feel good about.

3. Star anything that shows to be a pattern across your career. These are the clues to the through-line in your story.

Step 3. Career Story Spine

Your career story doesn’t need to be an exhaustive list of everything you’ve ever done. In your Telling My Story note (or a separate Career Story Spine note if you wish) finish the following prompts to help you create your outline. Keep it short and honest.

  1. I started out …  (could be your first job, your education, a leap)
  2. Originally I … (what you tried, pursued early on)
  3. Things changed when … (a turning point or realization)
  4. Along the way I discovered I’m good at … (3  - 5 specific skills)
  5. Today, I … (what you do now, in simple language)
  6. This means something to me because … (why your work matters - to you and to others)
  7. I’m moving toward … (the direction you’re exploring or building toward)
  8. Convert to Source

Step 4. From Spine to Spoken

This step is the core of the capsule. Here you get a chance to build your narrative, your way. To start with a visual to guide you, in your mission console:

  1. Go to Studio and select the arrow on the Slide Deck button (do not select the button itself).
  2. Select Detailed Deck
  3. Choose your language and length
  4. Choose Sources - deselect all and select your curriculum vitae, functional resume, My Career Story note, and any other relevant sources.
  5. Enter the following prompt:

Please create a slide deck that helps me practice speaking about my career story. The deck should follow this framework:

Past - how I got here

Present - what I do now

Future - where I’m headed

Identify the through-line across my experience, key turning points, strengths, values, impact, and direction. Use plain, natural language and translate formal résumé content into a coherent spoken narrative. Do not mechanically recite my work history. Instead, build slides that help me explain who I am professionally, how I create value, why my work matters, and where I’m headed.

Please also include:

  • Short career narrative summary
  • 60 - 90 second spoken version
  • 3 - 5 reusable phrases I can practice saying outloud
  1. Select Generate
  2. Practice speaking your story outloud using the slides as prompts. Spend as much time on this step as you need. Keep practicing until you feel comfortable.
  3. (Optional) Repeat the process and instead of selecting Detailed Deck select Presenter Slides for an abridged presentation.
  4. Record yourself using your mobile device or one of the apps listed as optional additional activities in 2.3.

Take as much time in this step as you need. Invite someone to listen and give you constructive feedback, then reflect on where you would like to improve. Consider seeking resources specific to where you want to see improvement. There are many apps to assist with this, many with a freemium structure, and here are a few that may be worth checking out.

  • Orai - helpful for short practice sessions.
  • Speeko - helpful for overall communication skills and building habits.
  • Yoodli - works as a private judgement-free speech coach.
  • Wellspoken - web based AI analysis voice coaching.

English Language Learners

  • Preply - live coaching with real English language tutors.
  • Elsa Speak - AI assisted English language speaking and pronunciation practice.

Step 5. Distill Your Story into Song

Take a moment to pause from practicing. This next exercise helps you move from your head into your body and emotions.

  1. In your Studio select Note and write a brief poem.
  2. Title your poem “I Am the One Who…”.
  3. Write anywhere from 5 - 10 lines.
    1. Mention your education
    2. Add some or all lines from your story spine
    3. Add any future aspirations
  4. Open the app Suno.com.
  5. Copy/paste your lyrics.
  6. Select Create.
  7. Have fun and play with your options. If you’re not hearing lyrics and you’d like to make sure you have ‘instrumental’ deselected.
