Navigation Plan

Ask any captain and they’ll tell you, you can’t chart a path based on what you feel. 

First chart the path on what is real, and then use your feelings and instincts to guide the rest. 

You can pull out a map and point your finger, draw a line and say you’ll go there, but unless you know the waters and the elements, you may not be going anywhere. 

The wave of truth can overturn your craft, or run your boat aground in an unknown place. 

The currents unseen could drag you in a different way or into the path of hurricanes. 

As ominous as this sounds, as depressing, sad, and down, it’s the facts that keep your boat alive; free from surprises of the dangerous kind.

Your boat is ready to sail, and so are you. You just need your navigation plan to include a status of the actual water and land. Where are you now? What is your country, culture, society? What and where are its resources - does your plan have scalability?

Depending on your culture or family you may rely on serendipity or good luck or a healthy dose of optimism to trust that your future plans will be successful. And while beliefs and mindset are still essential to success, no amount of optimism will get your boat afloat in the middle of a desert. 

On the other hand if you tend toward despair and pessimism, you might find that knowing the lay of the land gets you thinking “I can” and is the catalyst for your boat to float when you had previously thought “I can’t”.

Zoom Out

One way to connect to all that’s tangible while ideating your course is to look at key pieces of your environment. Instead of being reactive, say for example signing up for an online course because you read a headline that it would be in demand, take a moment to pause, and get a big picture perspective. The exercise may not result in definitive lighting bolt answers, but it will result in exactly what it’s meant to give, perspective.

What are the literal underpinnings of your society? How do they interact with each other? Where do you fit in? Regardless of where you live in the world, for most countries, you’ll find that there are several essential components.

Step 2. Deep Research | AI Ally

Although it may sound counterintuitive, one way to zoom out is to dial in. Conducting research can help you widen the circumference or sphere and discover more about the place where you live and work as well as the places you’re headed. 

Take infrastructure and connectivity for example. It’s so woven into the fabric of our lives that it’s near  impossible to extricate it. Think back through your complete set of steps in one day of your life. How many actions relied on some component of infrastructure or connectivity?

• Take one or all of the above foundational societal elements and research your own society. Choose one or both of the prompts below and enter your information in the spaces to complete the prompt(s). 
  
  • If you now live in a different country from your country of origin, add to the prompt to explore how the various elements are similar and how they differ.

Cargo Vessel Captain

-Tracks around-the-clock navigation, weather, and ship performance reports (uses GPS, the vessel’s sensor networks, and satellite communication, including weather satellites).

-Adjusts path using chart systems and real-time data (GPS, ECDIS, AIS, satellite internet, and routing software.

Now imagine a major storm knocks out satellite connectivity and at the same time damages fuel systems or generators.  What steps can each person still accomplish? One small disruption can cascade into a freeze of massive interdependent systems.

Step 3. Iterate & Zoom In

Now that you know what is, take a deep breath, and find out what will be. Or, imagine at least. Use the knowledge that you gained in Step 2 to further explore how your world is changing and evolving and how it might impact you.

Can you imagine how your life would be different if you were living 10 years from now? What about 20? Ask in the chat to imagine how your life might change in the next 10 to 20 years. Read/Review and then ask for a 2 - 5 sentence summary of how the potential changes could affect you and your life as it stands today.

Navigation Plan 

You’ve zoomed out and zoomed in to get a lay of the land. What you’ve discovered should now inform your final steps of this mission. Chart your course and draft a navigation plan that you can start today, and carry out for the following 6 - 12 months.
